Getting started...

Welcome to this course in Academic Writing in English! My name is Benjamin Stewart, and I will be your guide throughout the course, assisting you in developing your academic writing knowledge and skills in English (as an additional language).

As your guide, I have certain responsibilities that I must adhere to...
  • Provide suggestions as to what you might write about, and how to narrow down a topic based on a particular purposeful text.
  • Based on written evidence provided by the participants of the course, offer direction and make suggestions as to how participants are writing to understand.
  • Based on written evidence provided by the participants of the course, offer direction and make suggestions as to how participants are writing to be understood.

As a participant of this course and depending on where you are in the writing process, responsibilities include...
  • Attend class (minimum of 80%) and provide ongoing written evidence of your writing.
  • Survey and analyze literature to determine what to write about.
  • Develop a plan, outline, graphic organizer, etc. demonstrating the organization of one's ideas.
  • Draft and edit text through self and peer assessment.
  • Determine where and how to publish final draft.
  • Consider all forms of feedback (i.e., self-assessment, peer assessment, and expert assessment) related to one's purposeful text and take appropriate action.
  • Ask for additional assistance as needed (in class, email, meetings, etc.).

Although there is no one correct way to participate in this class, to get the most out of this course, I would recommend you doing the following:
  • By day 1, access your personal UAA Office 365 account (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, One Drive, Yammer, etc.).
  • By day 1, create a Word Online document in Office 365 where you will work throughout the course.
  • Share your Word Online document with me and others taking the course (Show me how.).
  • Periodically access the Academic Writing in English Yammer Group to see current postings related to the course.
  • Refer to the feedback others receive on their own writing and relate it back to your own work.

Objectives

What is the purpose of the text? In academic writing the following rhetorical modes are usually considered:
  • Narrative: A narrative text, using the first person, is common in action research papers where one is recalling personal accounts of some past experience.
  • Description: A descriptive text sets out to state what, how, when, where, etc. of particular phenomena.
  • Exposition: An exposition explains why or justifies a particular position.
  • Argumentation: An argument typically contains an initial claim, a counter claim, and a rebuttal in an effort to persuade someone to think differently and/or to take action.
